The Story behind the Chiral Table series
There are so many types of bases for small round tables. One that has always interested me has three legs leaning together, "teepee" style. When three legs, each with a square cross section, are leaned together and join face-to-face, they have a certain tilt angle. It turns out that tilt angle is 55 degrees from vertical. This is a bit more than what I was looking for in a small table, since it would put the bottom and top ends of the legs very far from the table center. So I wondered, what would happen if the legs had triangular or pentagonal cross-sections?
My high school geometry helped me develop a model for predicting the tilt angle for joining legs, depending on the number of legs and the angle at the apex where the legs come together. And that model makes all kinds of combinations possible.
Chiral (pronounced "Kiral") means that the mirror image is not identical to the original, and often is used when describing helixes, whether "right-handed" or "left-handed." The digits in "351" refer, successively, to the number of legs, the number of sides of the polygon of the cross section of each leg, and the number of sides of the top. The "35" (or "39") indicates the diameter of the top, in inches.
